Shostakovich's 10th dates from 1953, the year of Stalin's death, and represents one of the composer's very ambitious efforts, lasting about an hour, and featuring a massive opening allegro. Aside from its obvious quality, the symphony is significant because it has been rumored to be a summa of the bitter era under this tyrant's deranged rule.

Certainly it is hard to imagine him daring to publish a piece like this whilst his tormentor was still alive, but the pianist and friend of the composer, Tatiana Nikolayeva swore that she heard him play parts of the work to her as early as 1951. Haitink's groundbreaking cycle of the Shostakovich symphonies boasts excellent playing and recorded sound, along with a solid, Middle European approach. As such, it's never less than enjoyablue. But a great work calls for inspired conducting, and in the Tenth Sym., perhaps the masterpiece of Shostakovich's symphonic output, Haitink doesn't find special inspiration.
